The Legion of Mary

The Legion of Mary is the largest apostolic organization of lay people in the Catholic Church located in almost every country of the world founded by Frank Duff in Ireland on September 7, 1921. The LOM has been approved by 6 Popes, and was endorsed by the Second Vatican Council. The main purpose of the Legion is to give glory to God through the sanctification of its members. Members become instruments of the Holy Spirit, in union with Mary, through a balanced program of prayer and service. Works currently performed are visitation/prayer programs, assisting at a monthly Mass at a nursing home, distribution of prayer pamphlets & sacramentals, and religious education. Members meet once a week for a 1 1/2 hour meeting of prayer, planning and discussion in a family setting and are given an assigned work done in pairs. Come as a guest to any meeting held each Wednesday at 6:45 pm in the Rectory basement.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul

Who We Are

The IHM Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a volunteer organization that provides financial assistance, counsel, and support to individuals and families experiencing unexpected crises, primarily in Andorra, Roxborough, Manayunk, East Falls, and Wissahickon. We have paid bills, provided food and clothing, offered guidance regarding social service organizations in the area…and much more.

How We Help

In the past year we have provided compassionate services to 16 families and 10 individuals, both Catholic and non-Catholic, struggling with financial difficulties. With the wonderful donations given by IHM’s parishioners, we have:

  • paid mortgage and rental bills
  • facilitated the installation of 2 new home heaters
  • purchased and installed a new door
  • paid bills for insurance, utilities, medical expenses, taxes and moving expenses
  • facilitated yard upkeep
  • paid for college textbooks and supplies
  • paid for new eyeglasses
  • and referred many to local counseling and social services

Learn About Us

This society is a world-wide organization. Learn more about it at www.svdpusa.org. Then please join us in this spiritually uplifting experience. Come to our meetings listed on the IHM Events Calendar on this website. You will find you are blessed with hidden talents, and you will gain more than you will give.

Is Someone You Know in Need?

Please spread the word about our Society to families and individuals in need of help. Encourage them to call 215-483-1000 (the IHM Rectory) and ask for the SVDP HelpLine where they can leave a message with their call-back information. Someone from our Society will contact them. A Team Visit will be arranged to assess and verify need. Everything will be handled in confidence.

How We Are Funded

Funds used by the Society come primarily from your donations to the IHM Poor Box and to our Annual Appeal via a church envelop, so please continue to be generous. Funds are also generated from your donations of used clothing and household goods to our announced GreenDrop Drives in the church parking lot or to any GreenDrop Collection location as long as SVDP is mentioned during the drop-off. Because we are all volunteers, all funds go directly to assisting those in need.
